What is PR?
If you would have asked me this question a year ago I would have given you an answer along the lines of “I don’t know, something to do with the public and its relationship to something?”. Which I suppose wouldn’t have been too far off.
From PRSSA website I found this definition of what exactly PR is – “Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their public… in other words, it is the relationship that a company has with the public, and is key to how successful the company is.”
I really really really don’t want this to be a boring educational blog post about the public relations profession, but here are a few misconceptions that people have of PR.
- That PR pros often don’t tell the truth – there is NO WAY that a PR pro is able to keep their job if they don’t tell the truth. This is a profession built around telling the truth and nothing but the truth.
- PR pros are heavy drinkers – …I don’t see an issue here so I’ll leave this one alone.. ok slightly kidding, but just as in any profession people like to unwind after work – it isn’t fair to generalize a whole profession.
- PR pros are great looking people – (I made this one up for a little comic relief) HA-HA
- Its a 9-5 job – Very false, PR is 24/7 365 days a year. You need to be available at any time on any given day.
And these were just a few of the misconceptions people have of PR.
